Problem / Situation
The overall form or total-form that we perceive when we view a building is key to our understanding of how the building is structured.
Solution
Choose one of the basic types of form - plastic, planar or skeletal, and make the building or other structure primary of this form. Mixing these types weakeans the overall effect of the building.
|
Supporting Patterns | In planar form, we perceive the building as being primarily composed of horizontal or vertical planes. |

 | In a building with a "plastic" or "sculptural" form, we primarily perceive a solid, three-dimensional, sculptural shape to a building.
Sculptural form gives realness and solidity. The eye can be helped to appreciate this through: Softening transitons from one plane to the next, suggesting existence of feature just around the corner revealing depth through transparency |

 | With a skeletal form, one primarily perceives long, skinny elements such as columns and beams, as being the shapes that give form to a building. |
