Buildings and other built environments should be created so that they are accessible to those with disabilities and to older people with limited mobility.
Consider the following when designing buildings and other environments for those with limited mobility:
- Create entrances at-grade, so that there is no step up or down required to enter the building
- Where at-grade entrances cannot be provided, provide wheelchair ramps instead
- Locate fixtures, such as doorknobs, sinks and light switches, so that they can be reached by someone sitting in a wheelchair
- Design hallways and bathrooms to be wide enough to permit a wheelchair to easily move and turn
- Provide elevators or ramps for access to any floors above ground level
